Vertical Gardening

As growing space is more than often severely limited  in the urban environment, one needs view the landscape as a three dimensional space. When designing food forests, permaculturists stack large varieties of plants within a range of seven layers of a forrest. Namely, the canopy, small tree, shrub layer, herbaceous layer, rhizome layer, ground cover and vertical layer( eg. vines) ….. If we apply the same kind of thinking to an urban environment, it becomes sorely apparent that there are huge amounts of  surface areas that can be put to use growing ornamental and food plants. Employing various techniques for vertical growing not only makes use of these spaces for plant growing, but adds greatly to aesthetics, cooling of the outside environment and insulation of buildings.

It should be noted that special care should be given to prevent the deterioration of structures when affixing plants to vertical structures, as the water that plants require can have a corrosive effect on buildings. At Urban Farm Guru we employ methods of vertical gardening that require the least amount of water inputs and take extreme care to ensure that the integrity of structures that we plant upon are not adversely affected.
