Bioshelters & Urban Food Production
Eating local organic produce can significantly lower ones carbon footprint, but how this can be accomplished in the urban desserts we have created may allude us. On the surface It may not seem possible to provide all the food needs of a city within its borders. Thankfully, a little enginuity can go along way to providing us ample food within the confines of a modern city, and at the same time reduce our need for agricultural land, which in turn can be turned back to nature.
If you live in an urban setting there can be many challenges to growing healthy food in the middle of the hustle and bustle of urban living. Coupled with the regular challenges associated with growing food in a urban environment such as land access and polution, one also has to take into cosideration factors such as harsh climatic factors. Fortunately there has been a significant amount research and good annecdotal information produced by gardening gurus out there who have cracked the codes to growing food year round in the worst possible conditions. We have broken this information down into two overlapping subject areas: Urban Food Production Systems and Bioshelter Design.
Bioshelter Design
A bioshelter is a protective envelope that will significantly mitigate harsh growth conditions allowing for the establishment of an ecosystem that provides for human needs. These needs encompass evrything from grey water recycling to producing an aesthetic, comfortable environment that produces food. A bioshelter can be as simple as a shade structure or a very high tech greenhouse, the important point is that these structures operate with the least amount of human toil and energy inputs possible.
Urban Food Production Systems
Urban food production systems are the methods and strategies employed for high yield production of food in a limited space. These include but are not limited to, growing up vertical surfaces, using soiless growing mediums, automated irrigation, water and nutrient cycling systems, high density growing, rain water harvesting, water filtration and stacking these functions to work cohesively.
